Timeless elegance and modern comfort – Hotel Jnterlaken.
The family Beutler has revitalized Hotel Jnterlaken in recent years with stylish modernization, while preserving its historic charm. With a keen sense of both tradition and modernity, a unique atmosphere has been created that respects the character of the building while offering the highest level of comfort. Look forward to authentic hospitality that has been practiced since 1491, and enjoy your stay in an atmosphere where history and contemporary style harmoniously come together.
For over 600 years, our house has opened its doors to travelers from around the world. As early as 1323, the monastery inn was first mentioned in the chronicles – earlier than any other hotel in Interlaken, and one of only a few in all of Switzerland.
The Gasthaus Interlaken played a central role in the Bernese Oberland for a long time: it was not only the center of the large administrative district but also the site of important state actions. In the venerable courtroom on the first floor, wrongdoers were once brought to justice. Today, this room serves a more peaceful function as a stylish seminar and conference room.
In 1491, the then-owner Louis Ross had the house renovated and granted it its own coat of arms. It is believed that the Bernese authorities at this time officially permitted the operation of the inn. The late Gothic coat of arms relief, featuring two horses and two ibexes, can still be admired on the south facade of our listed building. Fragments of the original walls can still be found in the hotel lobby and in the Taverne restaurant.
The inspiring charm of the inn captivated two great artists in the 19th century: the English poet Lord Byron and the German Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn found the tranquility here that fueled their creative work.
Today, the former monastery tavern belongs to the Beutler family, who have been running it in the second generation. With a lot of passion and thoughtful renovations, we have bridged the gap between the historic substance and the amenities of a modern 4-star hotel. Explore over 600 years of history through a journey through the historic rooms – and enjoy the comfort of the present.
